Within the space of a few short years Abraham Lincoln rose from relative obscurity to national prominence. Prior to his debates with Stephen Douglas in 1858 he was barely known outside his home state, and most of the men whom he had met during his brief term in Congress had forgotten him. Nevertheless, in 1861 he became President of the United States, and successfully led the country during the tumultuous and unparalleled years of the Civil War. His untimely death “under the most atrocious and appalling circumstances” brought his career to a shocking conclusion, but forever engraved his legacy into the hearts and minds of his countrymen. The innumerable memorial services held across the country, and the twelve-day funeral procession by train from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Illinois, was the grandest display of honor and affection showered upon any individual since the patriarch Joseph led “a very great company” of chariots and horsemen out of Egypt with the remains of his father Jacob, “and carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah” (cf. Gen. 50:9-13). In Chicago alone the funeral procession accompanying the body of Lincoln from the train station to the Court House was estimated to be “thirty seven thousand, and there were three times as many more who witnessed the procession by crowding into the streets bordering on the line of march, making about one hundred and fifty thousand who were on the streets of Chicago that day, to add their tribute of respect to the memory of Abraham Lincoln.”This book traces the events from the time of Lincoln’s assassination at Ford’s Theater during the evening of Friday, April 14, 1865, to his burial in Springfield on Thursday, May 4. Never before in the history of the world were the remains of any individual viewed by more people than what occurred in connection with the death of Abraham Lincoln. His funeral train brought out mourners across the country by the tens of thousands. “In the course of the entire journey, there cannot be a line or even a word found on record, urging the people to turn out in honor of the deceased. The assembling of such multitudes was, in all cases, spontaneous. Day and night, cold or warm, rain or shine, for twelve long days and nights, it was only necessary for the people to know the time the cortege was expected to arrive at any given point, to bring them together in great numbers.”A citizen of Chicago, while the people were passing through the Court House by the thousands to look at the remains of Abraham Lincoln, was heard to say, "I have seen three deceased Kings of England lying in state, but never have witnessed a demonstration so vast in its proportions, so unanimous and spontaneous, as that which has been evoked by the arrival in the city of the remains of the fallen President."
